I like the thunderclap idea. It is simpler than what I was thinking.
I had pulled down a text to speech library and was having it say "You have ten seconds to vacate the lawn. The sprinklers are turning on in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Sprinklers turning on now." My daughters thought it was pretty hilarious when I tested it earlier. By tested I mean, hooked up speakers to the rpi, installed the libraries and ran espeak from the command line. Then I manually triggered the sprinklers.
