As far as the heat goes I would really suggest using a Pi 3B. It uses less power and runs cooler. Considering the system will be running 24/7 it will save on your electric bill over the years.
The relays are the most likely to wear out but I think you can expect the system to run for many years. My system has been running for about 5 years without a problem. I did upgrade from a Pi model 1 to a 3B this spring.
